Denmark’s and Greenland’s Foreign Ministers have stated an openness to help the U.S. address their security concerns, while still respecting Denmark’s control over the island.
Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt this week to discuss President Trump’s goal of acquiring Greenland.
President Trump has stated that the United States needs to acquire Greenland for the sake of “national security.” He has cited concerns that China and Russia may try to take over Greenland if the United States does not, which would then pose a threat to the U.S.
Minister Rasmussen stated that the discussion was “frank and constructive,” but also stated that there were “fundamental disagreements” that remained between the nations. The Danish minister stated that there is no immediate threat from China and Russia. Both foreign ministers stressed the need to focus on how to address American national security concerns, while still “respecting the red lines of the Kingdom of Denmark.”
The United States currently has a military base with 150 troops stationed in Greenland. There is also an existing treaty between the U.S. and Greenland that allows the U.S. military to increase its military presence as it sees fit.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For wisdom for President Trump as he works with leaders from Denmark and Greenland to help protect U.S. national security in the Arctic region.
- For Vice President Vance and Secretary Rubio as they have ongoing conversations surrounding the U.S. goal to acquire Greenland.
- For the president and officials in his administration as they focus on strengthening the national security of the United States and relationships with its allies.
